balti-mo' [Oct. 1st, 2007|02:14 am]
[mood |sleepysleepy]

ahh, yes, baltimore. i've been here for awhile. time flies. work is good (i go in at 7:30, and if you know me at all you're laughing at me and crying for me all at the same time. i know that was my reaction.) i really like the guys i work with...they're definitely giving me a thick skin. the best prank so far was dave welding the steel drum to my steel frame layout....very jackassy, but so damn funny it was hard to be mad.

i've been to new york to see jarrett once so far, he surprised me with tickets to see SPRING AWAKENING, which was amaaaazing. it also happened to be the weekend of "broadway on broadway," so we checked it out in times square and saw (from a few blocks away) such wonderful sights as lea salonga singing "i dreamed a dream." holy shit, right? right.

he was here last weekend and we saw arsenic and old lace (the show going on at CENTERSTAGE right now, which is hilarious, as always) and attended backstage @ centerstage, where he got to see behind the scenes of where i work (gotta give a science geek a little fun, right?). suffice it to say that he made me promise that our next visit will not be theatre-oriented.

i've been missing everyone back in greensboro...it occurred to me that i haven't smelled a certain type of smoke at all since i've been here, which is a huge change from the wilson st. house! it's a good time up here in baltimore...sorry i'm not being more specific, but know that i'm alive and well and missing the crap out of some greensboro fiends. i suppose that's all.

quotage [Aug. 2nd, 2007|05:36 am]
looking up some stuff on wikipedia, i ran across these quotes from artist marc chagall and thought i'd share, as they made me really happy. but it's also after midnight, so anything's game.

"In our life there is a single color, as on an artist's palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love."

"My name is Marc, my emotional life is sensitive and my purse is empty, but they say I have talent."

"We all know that a good person can be a bad artist. But no one will ever be a genuine artist unless he is a great human being and thus also a good one."

"Only love interests me, and I am only in contact with things I love."

oh virginia [Jun. 28th, 2007|10:26 pm]
so, yesterday was anna-got-out-of-credit-card-debt day! hooray!

unfortunately, it was also anna-got-a-flat day.

i drove through a constrution area of campus and got an inch and a half long shard of metal embedded in my tire. luckily i work with strong guys who put the spare on for me (tee hee) and directed me to a tire place where they could patch it. they balanced my tires too, so it cost $40 (of course i get a flat the day i get out of debt. why WOULDN'T i?) but the mechanic was hot so it's all good. :)

our second show, "little me", opened last night...we opted to have a hot tub party instead of seeing it. i was okay with that. but we'll be seeing it tonight, and i'm fairly excited...i mean, i just want to know what show could need a mansion, christmas decor, a huge boat, a pharoah throne, an iceberg, a lounge bar, and about twenty other set pieces i've forgotten about. i really liked the designer's cartoony style, so it should be visually interesting, at least.

in other news, jarrett's coming to visit on sunday, and then caverns and taverns will ensue!!

so, when jarrett got here yesterday we decided to take a journey into our nation's capital, just for the hell of it. not for memorial day, we would have done this on any weekend (and will probably do it again!) it was extremely windy(winnie the pooh and the blustery day type of windy) and then the rain started, but we ran into a gordon biersche brewery restaurant and all was well.

we then headed down to the capitol, just because. and because it was memorial day, they were having this free event--one of those cheesy concerts. but they also had speakers. including gary sinise (aka lieutenent dan) and...

COLIN POWELL.

we left after that because hey, there's nobody else the government would have sent out there that i would rather see than colin powell.

days off! [May. 27th, 2007|07:43 pm]
[mood |excitedexcited]

so, we normally work tues-sun, but the director of the program was like, "why WOULDN'T they get two days off for memorial day?" and thus--we have today and tomorrow off. and it couldn't have come at a better time. one of the guys had an injury earlier in the week (table saw mishaps...he's ALWAYS giving a thumbs-up now, as his bandaged thumb can't do anything else) and tensions have been kind of running high, since we took our last day off on saturday and have been working pretty hard...so these two days off are just the best news ever.

plus, it gives time for jarrett to come and visit this weekend. he should be here any minute now. i'm so stoked. :D

well, they DO say that virginia is for lovers...

super carp! [May. 21st, 2007|10:40 pm]
[mood |bouncybouncy]

so winchester is pretty cool thus far. lots of pretty mountains around...good places to explore on our days off. (we work tues-sun, which is weird. it'll take me most of the summer to adapt to working on sundays)

everyone seems to be pretty cool, and my roommate and i happen to have very similar habits and schedules and such. plus the best shower of my LIFE in our own bathroom (hooray!)

we spent the first few days getting the shop ready for the hectic summer schedule. which meant changing the rehearsal hall to the paint shop and the blackbox to the rehearsal hall. kind of a pain. then we got to build three MASSIVE props boxes (my happy job to lead, as master carp) and then the extension on the loading dock...all of which had their quirks, but hey, they're done now. we finally started building things RELEVANT to the first SHOW (go figure) which is 'Thoroughly Modern Millie," and i'm pretty stoked about it. i picked my project for the day to be this huge art deco...THING. it's going to be a flat, well, two of them, that mirror each other, are about 16' tall, and split apart. the fun thing is that they lean out at about a 7 degree angle, and let's just say that their construction draftings are more...guidelines. so it was basically a full day of work just ironing out this one stupid flat, because i had no measurements OR angles, and used a scale rule, only to find out AFTER i made the cut list (and cut it) that the printer hadn't printed in scale.

sunnuvabitch.

so yeah, it was a fun, fun day today...but i think it'll be a really fun summer. can't WAIT for millie.

so, erin and i were chatting friday at the scene shop's last cookout of the year, and she asked if i ever post on livejournal anymore. which i haven't done all semester. i haven't even had time to sleep, usually. but, now i have time to sleep, but of course i decide to procrastinate on the work that i didn't do last week...and here i am.

the big things in my life right now (which most of you probably already know) are as follows:

-my one and only scene design for UNCG, "our lady of 121st street", opened last week. i'm pretty pleased with the outcome of the whole show... i know laura, matthew and i worked hard and i think it really shows for each of us. i just wish the show had been earlier in the semester so i didn't have to deal with it the ENTIRE DURATION of the spring...it definitely was the cause of a lot of stress, bitterness, and all-nighters. but it's over, and it was good, and i was pleased, so who can ask for more?

-i have jobs taken care of for the next year, which is nice. for the summer, i'll be master carpenter at shenandoah summer music theatre in winchester, virginia. then, in august, i'll be moving to baltimore to be the carpentry intern at center stage. which, by the way, i am completely stoked about (and surprised by, may i add).

so, that's my life for the next year. i'm excited to be moving away from greensboro, but i wish wholeheartedly that this semester had been less stressful so i could have enjoyed time with my friends. not even seeing the people you live with can grate on you after awhile...so, in closing, i'll do the "grownup" survey, since i guess i almost officially am one...oh me oh my.

mommy, wow, i'm a big kid now... )

hooray voting, hooray for checks and balances, hooray for wake-up calls

but BOO for the fact that every state that had a "ban gay marriage" proposal was voted for (arizona is leaning towards "no," 49% to 51%)

people make me really, really, really sad sometimes.

that is way too much foreign language in a children's movie [Oct. 17th, 2006|07:06 am]
les poissons, les poissons
how i love les poissons!
love to chop and to serve little fish
first i cut off zer heads
zen i pull out zer bones
ah, mais oui ca c'est toujours delish
les poissons, les poissons
heeheehee, hohnhohnhohn!
with zee cleaver i hack zem in two!
i pull out what's inside
and i serve it up fried
god, i love little fishes, don't you?

here's somezing for tempting zee palate
prepared in zee classic technique
first you pound zee fish with a mallet
zen you slash through zee skin
give zee belly a slice
zen you rub some salt in
'cause it makes it taste niiice.

sacre bleu! what is zees?
how on earth could i miss
such a sweet little succulent crab?
quelle dommage, what a loss
here we go, in zee sauce!
now some flour, i zeenk just a dab
now i stuff you wizz bread
it don't hurt 'cause you're dead!
and you're certainly lucky, you are
'cause it's gonna be hot in my big silver pot
too-da-loo, mon poisson, au revoir!

So. What have we learned tonight? Don't watch Disney movies while working on period styles drawings. You can barely get one done during the whole film, thus frustrating you, then you're tired 'cause hey, it's 3am, and then you're filled with unrealistic expectations of love and the bitterness that follows because said expectations have never been fulfilled.

Le sigh.
